What a Del Monte juice can is to a Vespa rider (a tutorial)

April 29, 2007

del_monte_fruit_juice_drinks.jpgWhenever a new rider asks what tool should be in his Vespa glovebox, there’s always mention of the mandatory wrenches and screwdrivers, spare sparkplug and this one other item that seems out of place — a can of Del Monte juice drink! No, it has nothing to do with thirst-quenching, but rather, as an aid in lifting the scooter to replace a flat tire. An improvised jack, if you may. You see, the classic Vespa has a spare tire. It’s an amusing fact to those not familiar with the scoot, but a very practical necessity for any vintage Vespa (and Lambretta) whose tires are NOT tubeless. Once the inner tube (’interior’ to most of us) gets punctured, a Vespa rider has to stop at once and change it. A far cry from the modern conveniences of riding on ‘tubeless.’

Most say that you haven’t fully experienced riding a classic Vespa if you haven’t had a flat tire. I (un)fortunately had this experience in December of last year, but the circumstances weren’t so easy. It happened during my very first out-of-town ride, atop the Sierra Madre mountains, amidst rain and strong winds brought about by the tailend of a super typhoon which reportedly had left days ago. The only thing good about it all was that I’ve got company who helped me got through that ordeal.

Here’s a picture from that fateful day taken by Minggoy. That’s me in all-black raingear. Note the Del Monte can lifting the weight of my scoot’s rear.

As soon as I learned that my rear tire’s flat, I pulled over and so were the rest of the group. In theory, I knew how to change a Vespa tire but I haven’t really put it into actual practice, so you could imagine the pressure. Add the fact of the f**kin’ rain and the feeling that I was causing the delay for the rest of the group to go home before the rain gets any worse, and you get the picture. Hiding my panic inside the helmet, I got my tools, remove the crash guards (those chrome thingamajigs on the ground) and… Joseph (a Vespa mechanic who spearheaded the group) came by to help. *whoo!* In the process, I think Louie lent his Del Monte can and tire pump. In the midst of our rush and attention to job at hand, a strong crosswind toppled-over Mike’s Vespa (the last Vespa in the pic with headlight on). Remember: a Vespa has an all-steel frame, so the wind up there was really nasty. In panic, everyone went back to their own scoots and tried to secure them. Joseph told me not to help anymore and just be by his scoot. By then, I hit a new low feeling more guilty now because for the crash. I know it wasn’t my fault, but the feeling that it wouldn’t have happened had I not been flat lingered that time. Anyway, in a matter of minutes, things were okay and we head back home. End of story, right? NOT! Read the rest of this entry ?

Vespa Spotting: One Vespa, two versions of the same ad

April 28, 2007

I found this ad while browsing by the blog of Andrew McKechnie — a Singapore-based copywriter who also lived in the Philippines before.

This funny 30-seconder is for Visa Wave credit card and features an all Asian cast composed of a geeky Vespa dude up against 10 leather-wearing, maddog-type, big bikers. By mere mention of those characters, you can somehow picture a scenario what happens. Watch it now.

That TVC is actually just a tame version. The next one is the same ad but circumstance of why the ten big bikes fell is very different, though not exactly a breath of fresh air. ;) I could actually understand why the above version has to be done. This next one may offend the sensibilities of the ultra-conservatives who might have deemed it un-airable! *hehehe* Enough of the blabber, here’s fart part 2 now. :) Read the rest of this entry ?

A Worldwide Vespa Show & Tell!

April 26, 2007

ciao-vespa.jpgOne popular classroom activity is when a teacher ask the grade schoolers to bring their favorite toy for “Show & Tell.” Since Vespas are essentially toys for the big boys (and cool chicks as well!), someone decided to dedicate a website to serve as a photo database of various Vespas and their owners from around the globe.

Andrew Smith is a Vespa enthusiast who created Ciao Vespa for people to show their Vespas and tell their stories through his website. He started featuring Wasps only last March but there already are submissions that extends from US to South Africa; from Europe to the Philippines. *ehem* :)

If you also want your Vespa to be showcased in the site, here are the info you need to submit. Read the rest of this entry ?

Rider’s Profile: Owen Wilson

April 25, 2007

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a Rider’s Profile in here. Actually, it’s been a while since I have posted anything at all. It just that blogging takes a back seat when work or leisure gets in the way.

Anyway, I’ve found this paparazzi pic of this barefoot-Vespa rider in Malibu a few weeks back and thought of sharing it here.

He’s half of the Wedding Crashers tandem, and currently banging dating Kate Hudson. Some lucky guy! Find out more. Read the rest of this entry ?

Badge of Honor!

April 14, 2007

The Vespa Club of the Philippines (VCOP) holds a regular breakfast meeting every month and I was particularly excited to attend the meet this morning since the prototype of the VCOP badge will be finally be presented. Maybe a little too excited as it was the first time to see something I designed on a material other than paper. I take pride in this badge since I will see something I designed displayed on scoots of my fellow riders.

When Marko arrived with the sample badge, everyone in the meeting was pleased with the outcome. So pleased that we even went out to the parking lot to try putting it on our scoot to see how can the badge be displayed. Bob (Minggoy) even took out his camera to take some pictures with PYKE as a ‘model’ in some shots. Here it is stuck on the tax exemption display disc on my Vespa’s front fender.

See here the other ways you can display the VCOP badge. Read the rest of this entry ?

Off-Vespa: Zip Drive!

April 12, 2007

Every Holy Week, our family (my folks, siblings, in-laws and all the grandchildren) troop to CaliRana — our family’s lakeshore resort situated at Lake Caliraya in Laguna. Though we have a big family, this annual 3-day holiday is not exactly a reunion as we regularly see each other at least once a month for any reason to celebrate.

There are lots of outdoor activities in the resort and I usually go swimming with the kids on late afternoons. But not this year since I chose to simply laze around the main guest house to hangout and chat with with my siblings and in-laws. I wasn’t even able to try the jet ski my dad recently acquired. Felt just plain lazy!

But my wife brought a pair of zips for us to try. Since regular scootering on a Vespa is hardly a physical activity, I’m obviously in much need of an exercise so I was willing to give it a shot. Besides, it looks so easy to learn. Truth is, the simplest move is as easy as playing with a yoyo. But it get’s tricky once you try to cross your arms or attempt to do any other fancy moves. Though it may be not as hard as learning how to surf or something. It would be cool to learn some tricks with it and it would surely be a great cardio excersise. Of course, the younger set proved to be fast learners. Here’s a pic of my 13-year old niece — Justine — twirling the zips. Shots courtesy of my brother, Fol Rana, Jr.

Vespa Spotting: Guess the Movie (Easy Round)

April 10, 2007

Instead of simply listing down the Hollywood movies which featured a Vespa in them, I decided to have a little fun ala FilmWise. I will be presenting screencaps from movies and you try to guess the title of the movie.

I made this round quite easy by presenting ‘character-driven’ images. There are only ten items. Look closely at the screencaps and you’ll see the lead or supporting character(s) from each movie which will serve as the clue. Try to post your answers in the comment section. :)

Ready? Let’s start!

A feather on my cap helmet!

April 4, 2007

Last Monday, I’ve just successfully finished the long and daunting ride around Northern Luzon with four other iskuteristas. The itinerary took five days to complete and involved overnight pitstops at Banawe –> Tuguegarao –> Laoag –> San Juan, La Union. Here’s a map highlighting the route we’ve traveled.

Sunday night, while having my dinner in the surfing town of San Juan, I got a call from my wife informing me that this blog has just been named as the Best Sports & Recreation Blog in the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards held last March 31. Woo-hoo! Read the rest of this entry ?
