A feather on my
Last Monday, I’ve just successfully finished the long and daunting ride around Northern Luzon with four other iskuteristas. The itinerary took five days to complete and involved overnight pitstops at Banawe –> Tuguegarao –> Laoag –> San Juan, La Union. Here’s a map highlighting the route we’ve traveled.
Sunday night, while having my dinner in the surfing town of San Juan, I got a call from my wife informing me that this blog has just been named as the Best Sports & Recreation Blog in the 2007 Philippine Blog Awards held last March 31. Woo-hoo!
Actually, I was suppose to attend the awards night to represent me and Bimbo (who will be out of town starting that day). But this North Luzon ride came-up at the last minute and was just too tempting for me to resist. Besides, never in my wildest dreams did I expect to win (though I really wanted to… hehehe). So the news of the award came as a sweeeeet homecoming surprise for a long, hard and tiring ride.
I do hope to blog about the sights and experiences I’ve had in the course of this epic ride. In the mean time, let me share with you my reply to the email interview conducted by Jhay Rocas for his Philippine Blog Awards: Finalist Spotlight series.

1. How does it feel to be nominated for the PBA?
I actually didn’t know I was nominated until I read it in Bimbo’s blog. He mentioned that his friend ‘John’ was also nominated. I was kinda hoping he was referring to me yet I also felt it was a far-fetched idea so I dismissed it din agad. When I clicked on the name, it landed on my site so I was really surprised but very, very glad about the news! Then, I immediately felt very thankful yet guilty to whoever nominated me since I haven’t been updating my blog at that time. It was really totally an emotional roller coaster!
2. Do you know who nominated you?
Sadly, no. But I really want to find out so I can at least email him/her my appreciation.
3. Why do you think your blog was nominated?
My answer to that would depend on weather or not the person (who nominated my blog) is a rider or not. If you’ve observed, the finalist blogs in the Sports & Recreation category are niche blogs; meaning, most people won’t even bother reading our posts if it didn’t interest them. It’s not like a travel or photo blog that most people can relate to.
So if he/she is a rider, then the nomination is simply a ‘love-your-own’ thing. We riders are like brothers and would naturally gravitate with each other. But if he or she is not a rider, then that would be mind-blowing! It was already hard for me to believe that people bothered to nominate blogs that aren’t theirs. And as it turns out, this was more of the rule rather than the exception in the Pinoy blogging community. But for a non-rider to nominate my blog means that he/she found the things I write interesting enough to take the trouble to nominate. Truly, affecting readers is every writer’s joy.
4. Who do you think will win in your category?
Bimbo aka Vespinoy hands down. He’s a veteran Vespa blogger. He also did so much for the local Vespa community; that alone makes him deserving of the award. In fact, his blog is largely the inspiration why I came up with “Who rides a Vespa?”
5. Why do you think you should win?
At the risk being branded coy, I really don’t think I should win. But I won’t deny that I would be so so glad if I did! Who wouldn’t, diba?
6. What would you do if you win?
Blog about it agad, of course! I will also treat my friends in the Vespinoy community with booze on our next Vespa Night. I’ll also try to ask the PBA organizers for the name of the person who nominated me and maybe send him/her a Vespa shirt or something as a simple token of my appreciation.
7. What do you think of the Philippine Blog Awards?
Honestly, I really didn’t give much thought about PBA at the start as I never felt I’d be nominated since I don’t personally know any prominent local blogger (except maybe for Bimbo). But of course, now I’m singing a different tune. PBA has a great mix of nominees and finalists. I initially thought that the lineup will consistof a “cliquish” group of bloggers. Well, my blogs is in the final list so my initial observation was unfair and totally inaccurate.
8. Is there a blog that’s not nominated but deserves to be nominated in the PBA?
I’m sure there are other better local blogs out there. But content is useless if nobody gets to read them. So I guess, the good blogs that weren’t nominated are those which didn’t have enough solid audience. The readers played a large part in the nomination process.
9. Would you join the next Philippine Blog Awards?
If it is up to me, I’d say yes. I hope someone finds my blog worthy enough to be nominated again next year and the year after that….
10. Any messages to your fellow nominees?
Congratulations, you guys! If any of you needs a seatmate during the awards show, let me know. I don’t know anybody either. hehehe

Here are three news items about the awards:

• Philippine Blog Awards cites 22 best blogs in RP (GMAnews.tv)
• Blogging A-list (Manila Standard Today)
That’s it for now. I still don’t have an idea how I would claim my trophy; I’ll contact the Philippine Blog Awards organizers after Lent. Hope to get back to blogging after Holy Week.
Have a meaningful weekend,
