Isn’t Coca-Cola as classic as a Vespa?

June 6, 2007

My wife is a big Coca-Cola collector. In fact, our collection (I collect everything Simpsons!) has gotten so big that the stuff had to stay displayed in my folk’s attic since we simply got no space in our house. Today being my wife’s birthday, I decided to blog about Coke; but since this is a Vespa territory, if still need to connect it with the scooter somehow.

I thought that was easy. Simply scour the ‘net and look for a pic of the coolest-looking, Coke-themed Vespa. But that proved to be no easy task. There simply isn’t much Coke Vespa images posted online. I’ll be happy to be proven wrong here. But for now, this is the best Coca-Cola-themed Vespa image that I’ve found.

I forgot where I got this picture. If anyone knows, please do let me know so I can give the proper credits :)

I like how that scoot looks. It got the right Coca-Cola red and the legshield somehow resembles a Coke-in-can already. In fact, there are Coke cans cut and sculptured like a Vespa being sold in Bangkok that looks just like that. I was really keen on buying it for my wife except that they were just so ridiculously expensive!

Anyway, if a Coke-themed Vespa image is hard to come by, I found something rarer and definitely looks more vintage. It’s of a local Coca-Cola poster girl who looks anything but a poster girl. It’s actually sooooo cheesy and baduy that it already looks cool. It’s something like those cool Imelda shirts you see nowadays. If you wear one of those back in the late 80′s, you’ve probably been stoned to death! Can wait to find out who this unlikely Coca-cola poster girl was? Check this out then!

SI ATE GUY!!!!

Doesn’t it look like a picture you’ll find in pages of Nostalgia Manila than in a Vespa blog? I honestly don’t know if Nora Aunor (the SUPERSTAR!!!) has been an official endorser of Coke. It just seems so out-of-character for Coke. But who am I to know? This ad came out in the ’70s and I was just a kid then. And I know Nora is a big name especially during that time.

Basing on the picture, it sure looks like its not an amateur snapshot. Even the way she held the bottle (with the Coca-Cola logo curiously facing the camera) is quite telling that the shot was somehow “orchestrated.” And look… no straw! If you look closely, the scan even has an autograph of the actress. Looks to me that she handed this photograph to fans.

So where did I get this picture? I found it years ago in the official Nora Aunor website. It has been in my image folder for a very long time. I just had to save it the moment I saw it, and it’s only now that I had the chance to share it with others. ;)

So I know the next question here is: what was I doing snooping around Nora Aunor’s website? Umm…errr… I’d rather not answer that on the basis that I might just further incriminate me. But I guess, I already dug my own grave by mere posting of the above pic.

Well the point here is, I’m willing to risk being branded as a “Noranian” for my wife (not that I think there’s anything wrong with that)! I want her to be happy and to feel special on her birthday. I’m not saying she’s a Nora fan… though we’d never really know, won’t we? bwahahaha!

Happy birthday, wifey!

I don’t know if the band Material Issue was popular over there or not, but the lead singer, Jim Ellison was a scooterist and had a Lambretta painted in Coca Cola colors. Sadly he committed suicide several years ago (actually sitting on his Lambretta in his parents garage), so that design is sort of creepy to me. I have a photo of his bike somewhere that I bought at his estate sale, along with a toy vespa, I’ll try to find it. My friend lived down the street from him and she’s heard ghost stories about his house (and the toy scooter was haunted, too!).

Hey Bryan! It would be nice to see the picture of Jim Ellison’s Coca-Cola scoot. JHe was on that scoot when he killed himself? He must’ve really love that Lambretta of his.

I got curious with the story behind your haunted toy Vespa. I think I’d love to hear that. ;)

    Hey,

My uncle has a coca cola vespa in the attic of his company. He will do some repairs on it, so it can be driven. I will post the link to pictures once i get the time to make some!

    Cheers!

Do post a link here once you have some pictures of your uncle’s Coke Vespa, Florian. I’d love to see it. :)

I have a 1953 vespa classic scooter, 150cc, color white, good running condition, nothing to fix. Just like the one used by Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in the famous “Roman Holiday” film. I’m selling it to any interested buyer at best offer.
