Off-Vespa: a La-Z-boy busride, some wakeboarding and goin’ underwater in CamSur!

August 29, 2007

The times I get to go out-of-town is either on a relaxing vacation with my wife & daughter or an adrenalin-pumping ride with my Vespa buddies. But once a year, a road trip is scheduled around August with the boys (Bong, Jayz & Denden) without our wives and kids. Last year took us to a spelunking trip to the cool, mountainous town of Sagada (watch our video here).

For this year, we initially planned beach bumming in Pagudpud with Karl (sans Mimi) tagging along. But when Randall heard of our plans, he invited us to his home province in CamSur to spend our 4-day trip there instead. First, here’s a group shot of this trip’s cast of characters:

So off we went. He booked us for an 8+ hour busride to Naga aboard ‘Isarog X-treme’ – a 20-seater aircon bus with spacious and reclining La-Z-boy for seats! The headrests are even foldable for added comfort for sleepyheads. They even thought of adding a throw for those who wish to snuggle with a blanket; but none of us used it since the smell is not exactly ‘garden-fresh!’ hahaha! A clean 737-ish bathroom is located at the mid-section of the bus. Three flatscreen LCD TVs are mounted from the ceiling at the forward, mid- and back sections of the bus. They downside is that the video is not in-sync with the audio which made pleasurable viewing impossible. We left the bus station in Cubao by 8:30PM and arrived Naga at 4:30AM the next day. Had our breakfast in Biggs at the towncenter then headed to Pili afterwards to check-in a Trailer Home at the CWC (CamSur Watersports Complex). From the outside, one would not expect much with our chosen accommodation. But once inside, the place looks great! The seemingly small trailer has all these inside (from left): masters bedroom; kitchen with mini ref, sink, & microwave oven; receiving area facing the main door; another bedroom (twin sharing) with TV & DVD; and a spacious bathroom. All of us knew we just have to be back there to bring our partners/families the next time.

Slept for a while and got up in the afternoon to try our hands in wakeboarding. Read the rest of this entry ?

Vespa Spotting: A little Brit different!

August 24, 2007

This is the station ID which BBC America came up with when they introduced their new logo and tagline early this year. It’s very different from the three little branding blocks that audiences worldwide has gotten used to. But I would say that the new logo is “younger,” witty, less serious, and very Brit (very MOD in particular). The spot involves motorcycles and has a twist on this familiar American culture. It has a subtle “British invasion” theme to it. Check out this 10-seconder they aired to launch their new identity…

When I fist saw the ad above mentioned in 2StrokeBuzz, I went straight to YouTube to look for other interesting ad the company has made in the past.

There is this one-minute TV ad for BBC Radio which involved a powerhouse cast featuring great music legends together with this generation’s music sensations. It’s sort of an Alternate Reality. This ad won several awards including the Gold in Best TV Ad category in the 2007 Creative Circle Awards and recognition for its direction, editing and computer graphics/special effects.

The ad weaved a dream Elvis Presley concert scenario with an amazing band lineup: Marvin Gaye (2nd lead vocals), Stevie Wonder (piano), Jimmy Page (lead guitar), Kheith Moon (drums), Sheryl Crow (bass), Noel Gallagher of Oasis (rhythm guitar), and Sugababes (back-up vocals). The video look so authentic, it looks like it’s an actual clip from an old concert video. Check it out: Read the rest of this entry ?

of Pendants & Patches…

August 6, 2007

pendants-vespa.jpg

I first heard of this Perlini’s Silver Vespa pendant last April when two pieces of the flat design were up for sale in this Vespinoy forum thread. My riding buddies who got ‘em swore the item looks really good for its price. I thought so too that’s why I placed an order for the next batch. But sadly, it was out of stock.

I was hoping to order it somewhere online so I googled Perlini’s Silver Vespa and the search led me to the site of Vespa Club of Singapore and learned from there that the city has several Perlini’s Silver stores. The next chance I got there, my daughter & I visited the branch nearest our hotel and I was surprised that there’s another Vespa pendant in  3D design with a two-tone  enamel coating (red & white). With my daughter’s thumb’s-up, I bought the two designs. She never saw any of those pendants again until I brought one out yesterday… HER 8TH BIRTHDAY! Read the rest of this entry ?

Art Vespa: My Simpsonized family (…and the voices behind the show)

August 4, 2007

As I mentioned before, simpsonizeme.com is a site that coverts your own photo to look like a 2D Simpsons character. A couple of my riding buddies tried it out and posted their simpsonized caricatures in the Vespinoy forum.

Here are the ones I’ve done for my family. Of course, I had to sit me down on a Vespa to make the image go with my blog’s main topic. ;)

simpsonized-familiarana.jpg

Try it with your own picture and see how things turn up. :D The sad white bunny by my daughter’s foot is her pet Robby whom she got as a gift out of the magician’s hat during her 7th birthday party exactly a year ago. It is with a heavy heart that we are giving the pet up for adoption to find her a more suitable home. The above art is lovingly dedicated to her. :)

Anyway, to go back on the Simpsons topic: I have always thought it’s common knowledge that the voice of Bart Simpson is done by a grown woman. Then I’d realize that only die hard fans of the show would care to know of such detail. I was even more amazed when my wife & daughter got very interested watching a clip I was viewing in YouTube where the main voice talents behind The Simpsons guested in Inside the Actor’s Studio and were interviewed as the characters they portray. Watch the entertaining clip here. Read the rest of this entry ?

Rider’s Profile: Chloe (Skyler Shaye) of “Bratz: The Movie”

August 3, 2007

Let’s start off this entry by playing the trailer for this teen/tween movie

Yes, the movie’s based on the popular doll line of the same name. Now that you have an idea what’s the movie about, don’t go rushing to the cinema just yet. I’ve read reviews about this movie and they all say it’s really BAD! But hey, it’s another chance to profile a rider, so what the heck? Read the rest of this entry ?

Vespa Spotting: Ben Sherman store in Manila!

August 2, 2007

Edmund gave me a heads up that Ben Sherman opened it’s first store in Manila at the 3/L of the Shangri-La Plaza. The brand’s presence in the country is courtesy of Juan Miguel Ongsiako — the same guy who brought the Paul Smith label here. Now, I’m not what you may call fashionable (I’m just a shirt-and-shorts kinda guy), but I know the brand name’s closely linked to the Mod lifestyle and there are a few guys in the local Vespa community who are into that.

The last time I was in Shang, I made sure I check out the place. From the outside, you could see a big Target logo in the store’s glass facade, the ‘red bullseye’ of which is the inconspicuous door handle.

From the outside, one could see the black Vespa ET on display. Once inside, Britishmania abound with the familiar Union Jack all over the place. See more images taken from the store. Read the rest of this entry ?
