Rider’s Profile: Daniel Coquilla and his ‘tingala’ artworks

October 1, 2007

Allow me to start this profile by featuring an artwork of this painter cum rider. In the art circle, his works are easily identifiable for the skyward perspective and split-eyes of his subjects. The artwork below is his self-portrait with his two-tone green Vespa.

more about the rider: As an artist’s statement, Dansoy always have his picture taken looking upwards. bwahaha! Of course, I’m just kidding.

Cox has been a regular riding buddy and the pleasures of scootering brought us together in the back alleys of Binondo, the zigzags of Baguio, the boring straights of Batangas and the twisties of Pico de Loro. This dude was riding right behind me when I had my infamous ‘fancy moves’ on our way up Baguio and I’ve got him to thank for telling the rest of the boys exactly how it went. hahaha!

About his passion for the arts, he’ll be having his 13th One-Man Show called “Ibabaw” starting tomorrow, October 2, until November 3 at the West Gallery (Mary Santos Artcade, 48, West Ave., QC | 411.9221, 4110336). Here’s a press release about this exhibit:

dansoy-ibabaw.jpg

Inspired by the term “ibabaw,” meaning “on top,” a sign commonly seen on public utility buses, Daniel Coquilla takes this top-view perspective in his latest oil pieces that pan through crowded scenes. The main subjects include flyovers, overpasses, underpasses, beach scenes, fiestas, the Santacruzan, parades, and even escalator scenes. One of the works, “Uzi,” features the scene when former President Joseph Estrada was convicted guilty on plunder charges, depicting anti-riot policemen staying on guard as the so called “usiseros” (bystanders) watch from the top of an overpass. Coquilla plans to use this approach in future works, with a better grasp of utilizing landscape sizes and macro images.

A video editor for the UP National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development, Coquilla enjoys pursuing different outlets. “Shifting from digital technology to traditional paint materials isn’t a problem. The upside is that you become more creative. Especially when you find video editing work already too taxing, painting then becomes another outlet. Although they’re different fields, your access to both tools is always there, in many ways, I find it advantageous to shift from one discipline to another. I’m looking forward to be able to use both disciplines in one artwork one day. The result will not be only a piece of digital art, but even what’s behind digital art and centuries-old art forms like painting.”

That’s a great self portrait. Wish I had even a tiny bit of skill like that. Any attempt at a self portrait would be a stick figure…

Nice photo of COX staring at the sky, just like his very entertaining art works. You got the nice background on Natipuan beach and in the distance the peninsula of bamboo beach. Riding on to Punta Fuego?
