Pinoysiklo: a shot for a Guinness World Record!

October 8, 2007
by Abet Rana

pinoysiklo.pngPinoysiklo is a contraction of the Tagalog words ‘Pinoy’ (Filipino) and ‘motorsiklo’ (motorcycle). In an attempt to set (or break?) a record for the “Most Number of Motorcycles gathered in one place,” organizers is mounting an event called Pinoysiklo which will try to gather 10,000 riders at the Quirino Grandstand on October 20 (Saturday) November 24, 2007 (Saturday).

Here are more details about the event…

Who: Anybody who loves motorcycles
What: Grand eyeball and attempt to win the world record in Most Number of Motorcycles in one place
Where: Quirino Grandstand
When: October 20, 2007 moved to November 24, 2007
Why come: Fun, huge prizes, big-name music bands, games, contests

Sounds like a plan but would 10,000 bikes be enough to clinch the record? According to this 2005 article (scroll down to the last paragraph on that page), the Guinness received a proposal from Texas for the largest motorcycle parade. The institution said that adding such to the record books is a possibility, but they’ve set the minimum to 10,000 cycles.

That said proposal most likely came from the Republic of Texas (ROT) Biker Rally which claims to be the current holder of the “World’s Largest Motorcycle Parade” title as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records but no exact figures were given. In this article, it was reported that ROT had already 38,000 attendees in 2005 and 37,500 in 2004; those were years that a Guinness World Record was still out of the question.

Back in the homefront, officials in Dumagete City (southern Philippines) also organized a “Motorada” (motorcade) to highlight the Buglasan 2005 celebration for the “Longest or Largest Motorcycle Parade” in a bid to land in the Guinness Book of World Records. They were banking on the 29,000 motorcycles registered with the Land Transportation Office there the previous year. Nothing was heard if the city broke any record in the aftermath.

So I feel that 10,000 motorcycles may be too modest to clinch the “Most Number of Motorcycles gathered in one place” record, which I think is no different to “World’s Largest Motorcycle Parade” since any parade gathers all its participants in one place before it moves along. I just hope the organizers of Pinoysiklo did a thorough research about the record they are attempting to make or break. It would be a pity if they gathered 10,000 riders and not have a record as participants expected.

Just the same, I’d still wish Pinoysiklo the best in this undertaking.

Go, go, go!

The Shell Adventure Race 2 gathered (they said) around 6,000+ riders. So I guess, if we’re targeting the 10,000, is a big possibility.

The only question is: What’s in it for the riders?

So far, I don’t see any indication of time of assembly. It would be a pity if more than 10,000 riders showed up on the 20th of October but on different time of the day… 4000 in the morning, 6000 at noon and 5000 in the evening.

I’ve come across an article on the celebration of a Harley-Davidson anniversary several years ago when a minimum of 10,000 Harley owners attended the event. I honestly feel that we asould do way more than that number in order to be considered for a Guiness record. Maybe we could be the largest gathering of bikes in the whole of Asia if not the world. I’m in!

As an American living here in the Philippines and a bike rider, I think the organizers of this event should do some research on the Sturgis run in South Dakota, USA, as they have over 500,000 visitors durng the August run, I would assume that over 100,000 bikes are there. I would hate for this event to be for nothing, or anger my fellow riders due to hunhappy results in the record holding bid.

I quite agree on that one, Rob. :(

Cool! wish the Fil-Am Riders can attend, except we are all here in the Bay Area San Francisco, CA

  26. October 22, 2007 12:38 am

Greetings from San Francisco, California. I don’t think 10,000 riders is even close to break the world record. As a member of the Fil-Am Riders, we attended bike rallies here in the U.S. and it is way more than that (at least half a million bikes). More power to the organizers and I hope someday we can ride with you guys.

    Hi guys!

I texted Elcid Cruz (part of the Pinoysiklo organizers) and got a call just this evening from somebody from his team. According to him, there is a Registration Fee (P200 if I’m not mistaken) for all those who will be participating. In return, the participant would get something out of it (maybe a souvenir jersey/shirt of the event and some food — sorry guys, I can’t remember exactly).

Anyway, I asked him to visit this page and read the comments here so they could address all the concerns. Hope to see them here one of these days. If not, you can get in touch with them directly thru the numbers posted in their site: http://universitv.net/utv/pinoysiklo.html :)

Maganda sana ang hangarin nyo pero sana ininform nyo ang lahat ng moto clubs and orgs through MCP (motorcyclephilippines.com). Mayron nga kayong post sa homepage ng MCP, kunti lang din naman ang nakakabasa. Unlike MCP, they are directly coordinating with club presidents. Anyway, MCP will be having a grand eyeball this coming Nov 18, mas magandang ikompanya nyo tong event na to doon.
