Art Vespa for your pocket!

November 30, 2007

As a souvenir/token for Vespa Attack 3 (and as a way to advertise the site among other Vespa riders  ), I’m handing out a Vespa-themed pocket calendar for everyone. Here’s how it looks like:

For a backgrounder about the artwork, you may read more about it in this post.

I had 1000 pieces of this calendar and I’ll distribute it in the 3-day event. If you’re going to VA3, just approach me if ever I miss handing you one.

Vespa Attack 3 starts later tonight and ends on December 2.

Save-the-date!

Vespa Spotting: Sunday Sitti Ride

November 26, 2007

I almost missed this if not for Minggoy’s post in the Vespinoy forum. Turns out that yesterday’s ish of the Sunday Inquirer Magazine is all about motorcycles and the people who rides them.

sitti-inquirer-vespa.jpg

Right on the cover is bossa nova singer, Sitti, wearing short shorts and boots while riding a Vespa! Vespa Nova, the cover story, was written by Eric Caruncho who’s himself a Vespa rider. Here’s an excerpt:

- – - – - – - – - -

Locally, the cult of the Vespa has experienced a growth spurt in recent years, fueled by the entry of the modern Vespas and the continued fetishization of the vintage ones. Local aficionados bond together through organized group rides, the annual Vespa Attack scooter rally, and through internet forums such as Vespinoy.com and Euroscoot.net. Last year, the Vespa Club of the Philippines was organized. It recently launched its own internet forum as well.

Vespa enthusiasts form a subset of the emerging Pinoy scooter culture. Spiralling fuel costs and worsening traffic congestion, together with the introduction of inexpensive “underbone” scooters available on installment have seen two-wheeled vehicle sales go through the roof (together with a corresponding increase in road accidents). Granted, Vespa aficionados tend to be older, better educated and financially better off than the typical underbone enthusiast (the modern Vespas costing many times more than the average Japanese or Chinese scoot). But for both, their rides signify the same things as the first Vespas did for their owners: a means of freedom, mobility, and self-expression.(read full article here)

Vespa Spotting: Wasps seen in Award-Winning Photographers’ blogs!

November 25, 2007

With managing WeddingsAtWork.com, part of my daily routine is to keep tabs of wedding-related blogs to know the goings on among key players in the industry. The images I’m sharing here were those I’ve seen while blog hopping in sites of wedding photographers. Of course, I asked their permission first before reposting their works in here. :)

The first pic is by Mimi+Karl who’ve just been named as the 2007 W@W Supplier of the Year in the awarding held last Friday.

Capturing images of the wedding rings need not be a cliché by letting it lie on the boring and expected bearer’s pillow. The more imaginative the photographers get, the better the pictures!

According to M+K, the topper for the wedding cake was a Vespa to represent the groom and a Beetle for the bride. Mia rode in her Beetle to the church, although Jay had to pass up riding his Vespa because of the rain that day. See more pics from taken from Jay & Mia’s wedding.

The other photo is from a by MangoRed. These guys were named as the 2007 Rookie of the Year by the WPPP (Wedding & Portrait Photographers of the Philippines) . Randall — the guy who had been a very gracious hope in our recent CamSur trip — took this shot in the Trailer Park in CamSur Water Complex using his own Vespa as a prop. Check it out. Art Vespa: VCOP went Mod and got a new domain name!

November 22, 2007

The Vespa Club of the Philippines (VCOP) forum finally has an official domain. Friends and members may now simply type vespaclubph.com to visit the forum (special thanks to Jayson Arquiza for his lightning-fast assistance with the domain registration and redirection. The entire process was done in a matter of minutes, literally!).

Actually, this change has been brought by free-flowing exchange of ideas among some members in this thread which brought about new and quick developments within VCOP.It all started with a MOD-inspired VCOP art initially conceptualized by Mario & Bryan D. using the familiar Vespa script. I tweaked the design a bit by moving the RAF/Mod logo to represent the ‘O’ in VCOP, then Quadrophenic refined it by putting an fine outline on the target. Here’s how the final artwork looked like. November 16, 2007

Just saw this posted in the Vespa Club of the Philipines forum and thought local mods and scooterists out there might be interested.

Art Vespa: Mock Vespanomic Ads with Heroes stars!

November 14, 2007

I admit, I’m a “Heroes” fanboy. I finished the entire Season One in a iPod video marathon. Now I’m hooked with Season 2 with it’s 4th episode (The Kindness of Strangers) being the best ever for me!

Anyway, I’ve seen this picture of Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere) sitting on a Vespa before. But after seeing picture another Heroes cast member on a scooter, an idea struck me to make some mock Vespa print ads. For the ad copy, I used a line from this actual Vespa advertisment seen on the road. To make the ad series more relevant, the slant of the ads tackled issues taken up in Vespanomics, like traffic and rising gas prices.

Of course, I did try to input subtle humor into the ads, but I guess only peeps who watch the show would really get it. I used the closest comicbook-like font I could find for the tagline at the bottom of the layout to make it more familiar to fans of the series. Here’s the first one…

I don’t think you’d ever guess the next one featured in this mock Vespa/Vespanomics ad series. Read the rest of this entry ?

“Ghost” Riders: A Halloween City Ride around Manila!

November 11, 2007

I was excited to join this ride until I realized that my wife & I will be in Palawan to celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary and to spend the Halloween there with our daughter. Though I would never trade our family trip to El Nido with a ride (naks!), it still would’ve been great if I was able to join my VCOP buddies for this spooky-fun ride around the city.

halloween07-vespa1.jpg

The group met up in Walter Mart in Pasong Tamo took a route which had taken them to San Andres, and all the Binondo (Chinatown) for dinner and some bat and ball soup. Afterwhich, they headed towards to Malate, then Greenbelt to Glorietta, until finally winding down to party at Gweilos at C. Palanca.

Here are a couple more pictures from the ride… Read the rest of this entry ?

Topic Off-Vespa: Rain Clouds in Open Skies!

November 10, 2007

I just realized that this is one of the very few times I’m posting a shot that I’ve actually taken here in my blog. I usually get by just borrowing photos from friends to accompany my writings. Admittedly, photography is not one of my stronger suits. I’m posting this picture I took recently, not because its technically passable, but because it captured such a rare sight.

Here’s a backgrounder: My family spent our Halloween in the island resort of El Nido. As we boarded the small plane back to Manila, the sky was gloomy but it wasn’t raining. Around five minutes after take off, I saw on my side of the window, dark clouds and fog hovering over what seemed to be a reef or a small island. Here’s what I saw…

rain-clouds1.jpg

As I looked more intently, I realized that what I was seeing is an actual rain shower over Palawan waters. I could even see the trickles it creates in the calm sea. Anywhere around the rain clouds is dry. It’s like the thing you only see in cartoons; a cloud of rain pouring in just one particular area. I called my wife & daughter to my side so they too could see the breathtaking site.

It was a sight to behold! I don’t want to sound blasphemous or anything but I felt like God to get that rare chance and have a bird’s eyeview of nature’s wonder in action. That’s closest thing to describe how I felt.

Breathtaking sight!

Vespa gets a Gap ‘Crazy Stripes’ makeover!

November 8, 2007

To better appreciate this new designer Vespa, allow me to show you what this Gap ‘Crazy Stripes’ is all about:

Now, how would a Vespa look like if it dons those same colorful stripes? Well, it has been recently unveiled. If you’ve yet to see it, then look here! Read the rest of this entry ?
