Art Vespa: a custom Vespa USB flash drive

January 9, 2008

MBK Center (Mahboonkrong) is an air-conditioned, multi-storey bargain mall in Bangkok much like the Greenhills Tiangge here in Manila only on a more tiring scale! When my wife & I was there last November, we came across on the 6th floor a table setup displaying tiny cartoon and anime figures made of what seemed like a lightweight clay which feels more like a hard foam. They’re called Took..Ga..Toons.

Along with the familiar characters, there were also mini-sculptures based on the faces of real people. And what we thought were mere cute characters keychains like these…

were actually functional USB flash drives when the body is pulled away.

When I saw this particular motorcycle thumb drive, I asked the talented artist manning the booth (his name is Worradej Juengjaroennorasuk — Toe for short) if he could make one for my daughter riding a pink Vespa. I showed him my daughter’s picture in my iPhone and he took a digital shot of it and saved it on his laptop where he’ll base his work.

Here’s how the finished product looks like.

We were quite satisfied how it turned out. Toe did a good job! We paid around 1350 baht (approximately 1850PHP or 45USD) for this custom 2 gig USB flash drive. I think it’s 900 baht for the 1 gig thumb drives.

If you happen to be in Bangkok, this little corner in MBK Center is definitely worth visiting. But you need not be in Thailand if you’re really keen in ordering. Toe posted on his website how to order via email & bank transfer. Check the mod-Vespa clay sculpture below — it’s not a thumb drive though.
